De slanke cipres is karakteristiek voor het landschap van de Zuid-Franse streek Provence. Daar verbleef Van Gogh in 1889-1890 in de psychiatrische inrichting in Saint-Rémy. Hij vond de cipressen prachtig. De vorm en verhoudingen van de boom vergeleek hij met die van een Egyptische obelisk.
Met wervelende penseelstreken in verschillende tinten groen en zwart schilderde hij de bomen, met af en toe een likje rood voor het contrast. De kleur van de bomen was een uitdaging – Van Gogh noemde het in een brief aan zijn broer ‘die moeilijke tint flessengroen’.
